JSU’s The Sonic Boom of the South is one of three HBCU bands participating in Disney and Pixar’s release of the animated movie “Soul” to 4K Ultra HD, Digital, and Blu-Ray.
Marking the occasion is the “Soul” virtual jazz concert hosted by Academy Award nominee Jon Batiste, the jazz composer for “Soul.”
The event premiering tonight on Pixar YouTube at 7 p.m. CST will spotlight band performances by Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom, The Human Jukebox (Southern University), and The Marching 100 (Florida A&M University).
The 2020 film stars Jamie Foxx as a middle-school music teacher and aspiring jazz musician who is seeking to find the answers to “life’s biggest questions.”
“Quite naturally, this movie relates directly to the Sonic Boom because it tells the story of an African American music educator/jazz musician; so to celebrate a predominantly black feature film and music education is an honor,” says Little.
“It is also an honor and privilege to share this stage with other amazing HBCU band programs such as Southern University and FAMU; the world is beginning to see what we already knew about our students and band programs at HBCUs – they’re awesome.“
