Attucks Court and Good Intentions
It was all a dream, we were reading Wordup magazine, Thinking of how to safely quarantine.
An outlet to support kids and provide a positive outlet on Easter Sunday, April 12 was decried foul and according to many. A viral video on Facebook with over 3 million views shows large gatherings of people. Including a cookout and Easter egg hunt. The police were called to disperse the crowd, and teach social distancing.
While we need to adhere to social distancing and try and keep large crowds to a minimum. It was the comments in the video, by certain groups that were filled with derogatory remarks regarding the people in the video. The people, which were primarily African Americans.
The PNJ reports that Pensacola Police Department spokesman Officer Mike Wood added that Sunday’s situation was probably the worst case of large gatherings the city has seen in the 30-plus days since the coronavirus pandemic hit the country full force.
Peaceful Protest and the Demand for an Open Beach
The same week after shutting down the easter egg hunt in Attucks Court, the President continues a conversation about opening up America. The Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, agrees with opening Florida for business as soon as possible. 5 days later on April 17th, Jacksonville Beach opens up on the east coast in the State of Florida. The following day on April 18th a planned “Peaceful Protest” in Pensacola is hatched. The plan is about opening Pensacola beach and is scheduled on Facebook with over 76 people agreeing to meet. Another 250 plus are interested in attending as of today on April 22nd according to the Facebook Event.
The mayor has announced forthcoming plans to reopen the city as of May 1st. We have not seen plans from the county as of yet.
Bizarro
The dichotomy and position of people in the comments of a public Facebook video. The demand via public protest to reopen entertainment venues in the form of the beaches of Pensacola. We see you, we are taking notes, we are watching the way citizens in the city and county are being handled.
See an excerpt below from the planned event, Open Escambia County Beaches Now – Peaceful Rally Pensacola FL.
The County Commissioners must follow Governor Desantis’s direction and open our Escambia County Beaches with reasonable social distancing measures ONLY. No additional restrictions or requirements will be mandated.
The Commissioners must also urge Governor Desantis to allow the local counties to determine when local business can reopen. They then must act swiftly to open our local business with proper socially distancing measures in place and no other restrictions or requirements.
